Dr Merrick Zwarenstein is a senior scientist and founder member of the KTU at the Lung Institute, based here and also at the Keenan Research Centre, Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, St Michaels Hospital in Toronto Canada, where he is also an Associate Professor in the Knowledge Translation Programme, Dept of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. He is the founding Director of the Health Systems Research Unit at the South African Medical Research Council in Cape Town. He has published widely in health services research, both here and abroad (100 publications), focussing on pragmatic randomized trials of complex health care interventions. Dr Zwarenstein's research interests are better and easier methods for doing randomized trials, ways to improve the quality, outcome and experience of health services for people who use them, and teamwork in health care between different professions and with lay health workers.
